From Quicken to QuickBooks
QFX to QBO: Quicken files into QuickBooks
A QFX and a QBO are the same document underneath. What differs is the bank ID inside, and QuickBooks checks it. Here's how to get from a Quicken file to one QuickBooks will import.
- Same transactions, different bank ID
- QuickBooks Online may take the .qfx as is
- Desktop Web Connect needs .qbo
- Or build a checked QBO from the PDF

The short answer
How to convert QFX to QBO
Converting QFX to QBO means replacing the file's Quicken bank ID with the QuickBooks bank ID for the same bank and saving it with a .qbo extension; the transactions, dates, amounts and FITIDs are identical in both formats. The catch is that a bank's Quicken ID and its QuickBooks ID are often different numbers, which is why a QFX that was simply renamed to .qbo is so often rejected with OL-301 or an "unsupported financial institution" error.
So the conversion depends on one fact: your bank's QuickBooks ID, found inside any .qbo the bank has issued. If you have it, the edit takes a minute. If you don't, or you want the transactions checked against the statement, VouchRow builds the QBO from your bank's PDF statement for the same period: upload the PDF, enter the QuickBooks bank ID, and download a .qbo whose every row has been verified.
Step by step
Getting a Quicken download into QuickBooks
- 1On QuickBooks Online, try the file as it isTransactions → Bank transactions → Link account → Upload from file accepts .qfx as well as .qbo. If it imports, no conversion is needed.
- 2Find your bank's QuickBooks IDOpen a .qbo your bank has issued in a text editor and copy the number after <INTU.BID>. Compare it with the one in your .qfx; if they match, renaming the file is enough.
- 3Build the QBO from the statementSign in, upload the PDF statements for the same dates, review the reconciliation, and export QBO with the QuickBooks bank ID.
- 4Import into QuickBooks DesktopFile → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files, select the .qbo, link it to your account and add the transactions from the Bank Feeds Center.
Why it works
Building the QBO from the statement
The right ID for QuickBooks
The QBO carries the QuickBooks ID you supply, not the Quicken one inherited from the QFX.
Checked rows
Every transaction is verified against the statement's running balance and totals before export.
Older months
Quicken downloads cover a limited window. PDF statements usually go back further.
Repeatable IDs
Converting the same statement again gives the same FITIDs, so a second import is recognised.
Checked before export
A misread digit is caught on its own row
Every conversion is tested against the statement: the running balance on every row, page subtotals, opening plus movement against closing, the printed credit and debit totals, and the transaction count. When a number does not add up, VouchRow names the row and highlights the line it came from on the PDF.
Arithmetic only: it verifies amounts, balances and totals, not descriptions or dates, and two errors that cancel out would pass. The source-line link covers the rest.

- CHECK #1042−1,250.0015,354.12
- ZELLE FROM J MORALES+640.0015,994.12
Every row agrees with the balance printed beside it.
The difference
QFX vs QBO: one tag apart
Both are OFX 1.0.2 SGML documents with Intuit's INTU tags. The transaction list is identical. What differs is which product the file is meant for, and the value of the bank ID inside it.
| QFX | QBO | |
|---|---|---|
| Made for | Quicken | QuickBooks Online and Desktop |
| <INTU.BID> | The bank's Quicken ID | The bank's QuickBooks ID, often a different number |
| Checked against | Quicken's list of participating institutions | QuickBooks' Web Connect list |
| File extension | .qfx | .qbo |
| Transactions, FITIDs, dates, amounts | Same | Same |
By hand
Converting a QFX to QBO yourself
Open the .qfx in a plain-text editor. Find the line beginning <INTU.BID> inside the <SONRS> block. Replace the number with your bank's QuickBooks ID, save, and change the extension to .qbo. Leave everything else alone, especially the FITIDs, which are what stop QuickBooks from importing the same transactions twice.
If your bank has no QuickBooks ID, because it supports Quicken downloads but isn't enrolled for QuickBooks Web Connect, there's nothing valid to put in the tag. Borrowing another bank's ID can get past the check but misstates where the file came from and can tangle the account's online banking setup. On Desktop, IIF is the honest route in that case.
Troubleshooting
Errors after renaming a QFX to QBO
A renamed QFX fails in predictable ways.
| Error | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| OL-301 / "unable to verify financial institution" | The Quicken ID isn't on QuickBooks' Web Connect list | Replace INTU.BID with the bank's QuickBooks ID |
| OL-249 / unsupported financial institution | The bank isn't enrolled for QuickBooks Web Connect | Use IIF on Desktop, or OFX/CSV on Online |
| Imported into a new account | QuickBooks wasn't pointed at the existing account | Choose the existing account at the import prompt |
| Duplicates of transactions already in QuickBooks | The same dates arrived from a bank feed or another file with different IDs | Import only dates not already covered |
Context
Moving from Quicken to QuickBooks
Many people searching for QFX to QBO are moving a business from Quicken to QuickBooks, or have a bank that only offers Quicken downloads. For the move itself, bank history is only part of the job. Opening balances, categories and payees need their own plan. For bank transactions, the cleanest approach is to choose a start date, set the QuickBooks opening balance to the statement balance on that date, and import statements from there forward, one source per period.
Statement PDFs are a reliable source for that history. They cover periods your bank's downloads may no longer reach, and each converted statement is checked to tie to its closing balance, so the QuickBooks register lines up with the bank month by month.

Moving to QuickBooks with bank history that exists as Quicken downloads and PDF statements.
Banks that only offer Quicken files
The download menu lists Quicken but not QuickBooks. The transactions are the same; the ID isn't.
Bookkeepers handed a client's QFX files
Converting the matching statements instead gives files that tie to each month's closing balance.
FAQ
QFX to QBO: Quicken files into QuickBooks: questions
How do I convert QFX to QBO?
Replace the number after <INTU.BID> with your bank's QuickBooks ID and change the extension to .qbo. If you don't have that ID, or want the rows checked, convert the bank's PDF statement for the same period to QBO here.
Do I lose anything converting QFX to QBO?
No. QFX and QBO carry identical transaction data. Only the Intuit identification differs.
Why doesn't renaming the file work?
Because the bank ID inside is Quicken's, and a bank's Quicken ID and QuickBooks ID are often different numbers. QuickBooks checks the ID and rejects ones it doesn't recognise, usually with OL-301.
Do you accept QFX files as input?
No. The converter reads PDF bank and credit card statements, digital or scanned. Upload the PDF statements for the same dates and export QBO.
Can QuickBooks Online import a QFX file?
Its Upload from file option accepts .qfx alongside .qbo, .ofx and .csv, so try it as it is first.
Can QuickBooks Desktop import a QFX file?
Desktop's Web Connect import wants .qbo with a recognised QuickBooks bank ID. Convert the QFX, or use IIF if the bank has no QuickBooks ID.
Will importing both the QFX and a converted QBO duplicate transactions?
For overlapping dates, yes. A QFX from your bank carries the bank's FITIDs, and a QBO built from the PDF statement carries IDs derived from each transaction, so QuickBooks can't match one set to the other. Use one source per period.
