TD Bank checking, savings, business and card statements

Convert TD Bank statements to Excel, CSV and QuickBooks

TD Bank’s online transaction history is short; its statement archive reaches back up to seven years. Converting the PDFs is how the years in between get into your books.

  • Beyond the short online transaction history
  • US and Canadian TD statements told apart
  • Electronic, check and other sections merged and signed
  • OFX, QBO, CSV and Excel output

The short answer

Can you download TD Bank transactions to Excel?

Converting a TD Bank statement to Excel is the reliable route for anything but the most recent activity, because TD Bank’s online history is short. TD’s Online Banking service agreement says personal users can get balances and transaction history for the last two statement cycles on eligible deposit accounts (and up to 360 days on loan accounts), and TD describes downloading checking, savings and money market activity directly to Quicken or QuickBooks.

Statements are kept much longer. TD Bank gives online access for up to seven years to statements issued on or after April 2010; the agreement describes the archive as up to 84 months, building up from the first e-statement after you enrol. So for most accounts, months three to eighty-four exist only as PDF statements.

Converting those PDFs is how catch-up work, prior tax years and loan files get rows that tie to the statement balances — with the date order settled, which on TD matters more than usual.

Watch for this

TD Bank and TD Canada Trust are two banks wearing one logo

TD Bank, N.A. is the US retail bank; TD Canada Trust is the Canadian one. They share a parent, a brand and a very similar statement design, and they are separate institutions issuing separate documents in separate currencies. Nobody else on this list has that problem, and it produces two failures that both look like something else. The first is the date column, where US and Canadian conventions differ and a value like 03/04 is valid either way — so a misread shifts about forty per cent of the rows into the wrong month with no error raised. The second is the account: a TD Canada Trust statement in CAD imported against a TD Bank account in USD produces a reconciliation that is wrong by the exchange rate and looks, at a glance, like a rounding problem. Check the entity name and the currency on the front page before converting a TD statement, particularly if you hold accounts on both sides of the border.

Step by step

How to convert TD Bank statements

  1. 1Download the statements from Online BankingSign in to TD Bank Online Banking and open the account’s statements to review, print or download each PDF. Business Central users can export statements from the account’s Statements tab on a computer; TD notes this cannot be done from a mobile device.
  2. 2Confirm it is a TD Bank (US) statementCheck the entity name and currency on the first page. TD Canada Trust statements come from a separate system and are a different document.
  3. 3Upload to VouchRowSign in and add the PDFs. Digital statements convert in batches; scans one at a time with OCR.
  4. 4Check dates and balancesConfirm the date order chosen for the statement and that the running balance agrees with the daily balances TD prints. Click a row to see its source line.
  5. 5ExportOFX or QBO for QuickBooks and Quicken (bank ID entered by you for QBO and QFX), a CSV preset, or Excel.

TD Bank statement to Excel

An .xlsx with one row per deposit, check and payment: date, description, serial number where there is one, and a signed amount. Every money-out section comes out negative, so the column sums to the change between Beginning and Ending Balance.

With only two cycles of history online, a year in Excel means twelve statements. Convert them in one batch and sort by date; each statement starts where the last one ended.

Why it works

Why convert TD Bank statements

Months the download cannot reach

With only a couple of statement cycles of history online, nearly all of the past year comes from statements.

Dates read once, per statement

The date order is decided for each statement from the evidence on it, so 03/04 is not read one way on one page and another way on the next.

Sections signed correctly

Electronic deposits and other credits come out positive; electronic payments, other withdrawals and checks paid come out negative.

Proof against the daily balances

The running balance built from the rows must agree with the balances TD prints by date, and opening plus movement must equal closing.

Checked before export

A misread digit is caught on its own row

Every conversion is tested against the statement: the running balance on every row, page subtotals, opening plus movement against closing, the printed credit and debit totals, and the transaction count. When a number does not add up, VouchRow names the row and highlights the line it came from on the PDF.

Arithmetic only: it verifies amounts, balances and totals, not descriptions or dates, and two errors that cancel out would pass. The source-line link covers the rest.

TD Bank’s online history and statement archive

TD Bank’s download story is shorter than most large US banks’. The Online Banking agreement describes transaction history for the last two statement cycles on eligible deposit accounts and up to 360 calendar days on loan accounts. TD says checking, savings and money market information can be downloaded to Quicken or QuickBooks; TD does not publish the file formats on its public pages, so check the options in Online Banking. TD also has a page explaining how to restore Direct Connect access for Quicken and QuickBooks desktop through Financial Tools Access Management.

The statement archive is the long record: up to seven years online, for statements issued on or after April 2010, with the 84-month archive building from your first e-statement after enrolling. Business customers on TD Business Central can export statements from the Statements tab — not from a mobile device — and TD notes that each statement is broken into smaller files by date.

TD also offers statements in alternate formats on request, including accessible PDFs. Those convert like any other digital statement.

  • Online transaction history: last two statement cycles for deposit accounts (per TD’s agreement).
  • Statements: up to seven years, issued on or after April 2010, archive building from enrolment.
  • Business Central: statement export on desktop only.

Statement layout

How a TD Bank statement is laid out

A TD Bank checking statement opens with an account summary — beginning balance, electronic deposits, other credits, checks paid, electronic payments, other withdrawals, service charges and ending balance. Each of those lines is a total that the extracted rows must reproduce.

The daily account activity follows in sections that mirror the summary: electronic deposits, other credits, checks paid, electronic payments, other withdrawals. Every amount prints positive in one Amount column: the section decides the sign, and each section closes with a Subtotal. Electronic items carry long descriptions — the originator, an ID, sometimes a card number fragment — that wrap and are merged back into one line.

Checks paid are listed by number, date and amount, and may be printed in columns several to a line; each check is extracted as its own row. A daily balance summary closes the statement. It is used to check the running balance, not imported.

US and Canada

TD Bank (US) and TD Canada Trust are different statements

TD Bank, N.A. and TD Canada Trust share a brand and a family resemblance, but they run separate online banking — TD Canada Trust uses EasyWeb — and issue separate statements in separate currencies. If you hold accounts on both sides of the border, sort the PDFs by entity before converting, and keep the currencies in separate accounts in your books.

The date column is the risk. The date order is decided per statement here, from the dates on that statement — a day above the twelfth settles it — rather than assumed for the whole batch. Check the first rows of any TD statement whose dates are all the twelfth or below. OFX and QBO write dates in an unambiguous form, so once the order is right on the statement it stays right in your software.

Software

Importing TD Bank statements into QuickBooks, Quicken and Xero

For QuickBooks banking, QBO with TD Bank’s bank ID goes through the bank feed; if QuickBooks refuses the bank ID, OFX or the QuickBooks three-column CSV avoids that check. For Quicken, QFX with the bank ID, or QIF. For Xero, the Xero CSV preset. For QuickBooks Desktop journal-level import, IIF on the Professional plan and above.

Converted transactions carry deterministic IDs, so the recent cycles you download from TD and the older ones you convert can sit in the same register without duplicating where they overlap.

Troubleshooting

Common TD Bank problems and fixes

Most TD issues are about history length, dates and currency.

  • Only two months of history online: that is the deposit-account window in TD’s agreement. Use statements for anything older.
  • Some rows rejected as invalid dates: the file was written in a different date order from the one your software expected. The accepted rows are suspect too; export OFX or QBO, which state dates unambiguously, or match the CSV date setting to your software.
  • Reconciliation off by what looks like an exchange rate: a TD Canada Trust CAD statement imported against a USD account.
  • Checks missing: where checks paid are printed several to a line, a converter reading one row per line loses some. Each is extracted separately here; compare with the checks paid total.
  • Cannot export a statement on your phone: TD Business Central statement export is desktop only.

Before you import

After converting a TD Bank statement, check these

  • The statement balancesBeginning Balance plus deposits and credits minus checks, payments, withdrawals and service charges equals the Ending Balance. If not, the dollar difference is shown.
  • Every money-out section is negativeChecks Paid, Electronic Payments and Other Withdrawals are negative; Electronic Deposits and Other Credits are positive.
  • No Subtotal rowsNothing labelled “Subtotal:” among the transactions, and nothing from the Daily Balance Summary.
  • Every check presentThe number of check rows matches the checks paid, with no asterisk left in a serial number.
  • Dates in the right monthA day above the twelfth lands where you expect, and the rows from the first month of the cycle carry the right year.
  • US entity, USD accountThe statement says TD Bank, N.A., and it is imported into a USD account, not alongside TD Canada Trust history.

Downloaded activity and statements are not the same thing

Every large US bank offers two different exports, and people reach for the wrong one constantly. Downloadable account activity — CSV, and often QFX or OFX — covers a recent window, typically a few months, and stops. Statements are PDFs, are issued per period, and go back years. If you need last March, the activity export will not have it and the statement will; converting the PDF is how that gap is closed.
Suggested format

OFX for TD Bank

OFX states its dates unambiguously, which removes the ambiguity this bank is most likely to introduce.

FAQ

TD Bank statements: questions

Can you export TD Bank statements to Excel?

TD statements are PDFs. Recent activity can be downloaded to Quicken or QuickBooks from Online Banking; for statements, download the PDF and convert it to Excel here.

How far back can I see TD Bank transactions online?

TD’s Online Banking agreement describes the last two statement cycles for eligible deposit accounts, and up to 360 days for loan accounts. Older activity is on your statements.

How long does TD Bank keep statements online?

Up to seven years, for statements issued on or after April 2010. The archive builds from your first e-statement after enrolling in Online Banking.

How do I tell a US TD statement from a Canadian one?

The entity name and the currency on the first page. TD Canada Trust statements come from EasyWeb and are in CAD; TD Bank, N.A. statements are in USD.

Some rows imported and some were rejected as invalid dates. What happened?

The date order was wrong somewhere between the file and the importer. Days above the twelfth fail in the other reading; days below it are silently misread. OFX and QBO avoid the problem because they state dates unambiguously.

Does TD Bank support QuickBooks?

TD describes downloading account information directly to Quicken or QuickBooks. For older statements, convert the PDF and export QBO with TD’s bank ID, or OFX or CSV, which need no bank ID.

Can I convert TD Bank credit card statements?

Yes. Card statements have no running balance, so they are checked against the previous balance, payments, purchases, fees, interest and new balance.
