Truist, legacy BB&T and legacy SunTrust statements

Convert Truist bank statements to Excel, CSV and QuickBooks

Truist downloads recent activity to Quicken and QuickBooks and keeps deposit statements for up to seven years. If your history runs back past the BB&T and SunTrust conversions, the statements are more than one layout.

  • Current Truist and legacy BB&T and SunTrust layouts
  • Beyond the 18-month business download window

The short answer

Can you download Truist transactions to Excel?

You can download recent Truist activity yourself, but converting a Truist statement to Excel is the route for anything older or anything that has to match a statement. Truist’s online banking agreement lets you download account information into Quicken, QuickBooks and other software; small business customers can download or print up to 18 months of account history. Truist itself says downloaded data is for tracking purposes only and should not be considered an official record, and pending transactions are left out.

The official record is the statement. Truist keeps deposit account statements online for up to seven years and credit card statements for up to two years, with shorter periods for loans and mortgages — the exact period for each product is shown under Documents in online banking.

Converting those PDFs gives you rows that tie to the official balances, for periods the download does not reach — and it is the only practical route for statements issued by BB&T or SunTrust before those banks’ customers moved to Truist.

Watch for this

A year of history can be three different statement layouts

Bookkeepers catching up on a Truist account frequently have legacy SunTrust statements, legacy BB&T statements, and current Truist statements in the same folder — sometimes across a single financial year. They are different documents with different column orders, and a conversion set up for one produces confident nonsense on another. Convert and check each layout family separately rather than assuming a run of statements is uniform. Account numbers changed at migration too, so the older PDFs carry a number that no longer matches the account in your books, and any import matching on account number will refuse them.

What Truist lets you export

Truist itself draws the line: downloads are for tracking, statements are the official record. Converting the statement gives you rows built from the official record.

Download account information from online banking, or through Direct Connect, into Quicken, QuickBooks and other software. Direct Connect works with the desktop versions and carries a fee; Truist’s personal fee schedule lists Quicken at $7.95 a month.

Where it stops: Pending transactions are not included, and Truist says downloaded data is for tracking only and should not be considered an official record.

How far back

How far back each Truist option reaches

Truist publishes its statement periods by product and an 18-month window for small business, but not how far back a personal download goes.

  2. 2Sort statements by familyPut current Truist statements, legacy BB&T statements and legacy SunTrust statements in separate folders. They are different layouts.
  3. 3Upload one family at a timeSign in to VouchRow and add one folder. Digital statements convert in batches; scanned statements are read one at a time.
  4. 4Check the first statement of each familyRead the reconciliation result and spot-check a few rows against their highlighted source lines before converting the rest.

Truist statement to Excel

An .xlsx with one row per check, withdrawal and deposit: date, description, check number where there is one, and a signed amount. Checks and other withdrawals come out negative, so the column sums to the change between the previous and the new balance.

If the folder holds BB&T or SunTrust statements as well, convert each family into its own file first and compare the totals before combining them.

Why it works

What converting Truist statements handles

Three statement families

Current Truist, legacy BB&T and legacy SunTrust statements are each read as what they are, and each is balance-checked on its own terms.

An official-record match

Truist calls downloads tracking data, not an official record. Converted rows are checked against the statement, which is.

Combined business statements split

Where several business accounts share one statement PDF, each account is separated and balanced independently.

Re-imports without duplicates

Deterministic transaction IDs mean overlapping converted and downloaded periods do not double up.

Checked before export

A misread digit is caught on its own row

Every conversion is tested against the statement: the running balance on every row, page subtotals, opening plus movement against closing, the printed credit and debit totals, and the transaction count. When a number does not add up, VouchRow names the row and highlights the line it came from on the PDF.

Arithmetic only: it verifies amounts, balances and totals, not descriptions or dates, and two errors that cancel out would pass. The source-line link covers the rest.

Truist’s download options and their limits

Truist lets personal and business customers download account information into Quicken, QuickBooks and similar software, and offers Direct Connect for the desktop versions of Quicken and QuickBooks. Direct Connect carries a fee — Truist’s business fee schedule lists separate monthly charges for QuickBooks and Quicken — and in 2025 Truist published a guide to deactivating and reactivating Quicken desktop connections. Small business online banking describes up to 18 months of account history, including images of paid checks and deposit tickets.

Two caveats Truist states itself: pending transactions are not included in downloads, and downloaded data is for tracking only, not an official record. If the figures need to stand up — a loan file, an audit, a court filing — the statement is what they must tie to.

Statement retention depends on the product. Truist’s own disclosures give up to seven years for deposit accounts, up to two years for credit cards, up to 24 months for home equity lines and personal and auto loans, and up to 18 months for mortgage accounts.

Statement layout

How Truist statements are laid out — and the legacy ones

Current Truist checking statements, such as Truist One Checking, open with an account summary and list deposits and withdrawals in separate groups with their own totals, followed by checks and a running or daily balance. Dates print as month and day, with the year from the statement period.

The merger shows up in the archive. BB&T customers moved to Truist online banking in waves between July and October 2021, and SunTrust customers in February 2022. Statements from before those dates were issued by BB&T or SunTrust in their own designs — different column orders, different section names, different summary boxes. A conversion tuned to one family gives confident nonsense on another, which is why each family is checked separately.

For SunTrust business customers, Truist said at conversion that accounts sharing an entity name and tax ID may be combined onto one statement PDF. A combined statement carries several accounts, each with its own opening and closing balance, and each is separated before checking.

Software

Importing Truist statements into QuickBooks, Quicken and Xero

QuickBooks: export QBO with Truist’s bank ID. If your account number changed when your account moved to Truist, older statements carry the legacy number; enter the QuickBooks account you are importing into rather than relying on the number on the statement, or use the QuickBooks three-column CSV, which does not match on account number.

Quicken: QFX with the bank ID, or QIF. Xero: the Xero CSV preset. Truist’s downloads exclude pending transactions, so a converted statement and a recent download can differ by exactly the items that were pending; the transaction IDs prevent duplicates where they overlap.

Credit cards

Truist credit card statements

Enjoy Cash, Future and business card statements have no running balance; they are checked against previous balance, payments and credits, purchases, fees, interest and new balance. With only two years of card statements online, older card history comes from PDFs you saved — convert them before they become the only copy.

Troubleshooting

Common Truist problems and fixes

Truist issues are mostly about mixing statement families and account numbers.

  • Old statements convert differently from new ones: they predate the BB&T or SunTrust conversion. Convert each family separately.
  • QBO import refuses older statements: the account number on the legacy statement differs. Import into the existing account, or use CSV.
  • One PDF, several balances: a combined business statement. Each account is separated and balanced on its own.
  • Download totals differ slightly from the statement: pending items are excluded from Truist downloads. The statement is the official record.
  • Statements cannot be downloaded at the moment: an online banking issue, not a file one. Try again later or another browser; once you have the PDF, conversion is unaffected.

Before you import

After converting a Truist statement, check these

  • The statement balancesPrevious balance minus checks and other withdrawals plus deposits equals the new balance. If not, the dollar difference is shown.
  • Withdrawals are negativeChecks and everything under other withdrawals, debits and service charges are money out; deposits, credits and interest are money in.
  • No total rowsNo “Total checks” or other section totals among the transactions, and no summary lines with their minus, plus or equals signs.
  • Clean check numbersOne row per check, with no asterisk left in the check number.
  • One statement family per batchCurrent Truist, legacy BB&T and legacy SunTrust statements converted and checked separately.
  • Right account in your booksOlder statements imported into the existing account even when they carry a legacy account number.

Downloaded activity and statements are not the same thing

Every large US bank offers two different exports, and people reach for the wrong one constantly. Downloadable account activity — CSV, and often QFX or OFX — covers a recent window, typically a few months, and stops. Statements are PDFs, are issued per period, and go back years. If you need last March, the activity export will not have it and the statement will; converting the PDF is how that gap is closed.
Suggested format

CSV for Truist

Where several statement layouts are in play, CSV is the format to review in — checking one file per layout family is quicker than discovering the problem after import.

Who uses it

Who converts Truist statements

01

Catch-up across the merger

A business whose books stopped in 2021 has BB&T or SunTrust statements, then Truist ones. Each family is converted and checked separately, then imported into one account.

02

Loan and audit files

Where Truist’s download is not an official record, rows built from the statements tie to the document the lender or auditor already holds.

03

Divorce and estate matters

A history running back through SunTrust or BB&T years becomes one ledger with every row linked to its source page.

FAQ

Truist statements: questions

How do I download a Truist statement to Excel?

Truist statements are PDFs under Documents. Recent activity can be downloaded into Quicken or QuickBooks; for statements, download the PDF and convert it to Excel here.

How far back are Truist statements available?

Up to seven years for deposit accounts and two years for credit cards, with shorter periods for loans and mortgages. The period for each product is shown under Documents in online banking.

Is a Truist download an official record?

Truist says downloaded data is for tracking only and should not be considered an official record, and pending transactions are excluded. The statement is the official record, which is why converting it matters for loans and audits.

Can I convert old BB&T or SunTrust statements?

Yes. They are different layouts from current Truist statements, so convert them in their own batch and check the first one before doing the rest.

The account number on my old statements does not match my books. Why?

If your number changed when the account moved to Truist, older statements carry the legacy one. Import into your existing account, or use CSV, which does not match on account number.

Can I convert a whole year in one go?

If the statements share a layout, yes. Across a conversion date, split them by family and convert each batch separately.

Truist says statements cannot be downloaded at this time. What can I do?

That message comes from Truist online banking, not from the file. Try again later; once you have the PDF it converts normally.
