The short answer

Can you export an M&T Bank statement to Excel?

Partly. M&T’s Digital Services Agreement lets you export account information for Quicken or for spreadsheet software such as Excel, but only for recent transaction history, and M&T does not publish the file types or how far back “recent” reaches. For a full statement, or any month older than the export covers, save the PDF and convert it: you get the same Excel, CSV or QuickBooks file, matched to the statement period.

M&T keeps eStatements for up to seven years in M&T Online Banking, for checking, savings, CDs, credit cards, loans, lines of credit, mortgages and home equity accounts. The agreement calls the area the Statements and Notices service. Those PDFs are the complete record; the export is a short window.

An M&T statement prints a balance on every row of Account Activity, so a converted M&T statement can be checked line by line: each deposit and debit must move the balance to the figure M&T printed beside it, and the last row must land on the Ending Balance.

Watch for this

Every check is printed twice, and the balances sit inside the activity table

M&T’s redesigned statement lists a paid check as a row in Account Activity (“CHECK NUMBER 1234”, with the number again in the Serial Number column) and then lists it a second time in the Checks Paid Summary below, three checks to a line. A converter that reads both turns a $700 check into $1,400 of spending. The same table also opens with a “Beginning Balance” row and ends with an “Ending Balance:” row, each with a dollar figure, and personal statements carry two balance columns, Daily Balance and Ledger Balance. The converted file keeps one row per check from Account Activity, treats the Checks Paid Summary as a cross-check, drops the balance rows, and follows the Ledger Balance for the running-balance check.

Native export

What M&T lets you export

Each route has a job. Converting the statement is for everything the export does not reach.

QuickenSpreadsheet

Data export and Direct Connect

Recent transaction history

M&T Online Banking exports recent activity for Quicken or spreadsheet software such as Excel. Direct Connect, at $9.95 a month, downloads it straight into Quicken or QuickBooks.

Where it stops: M&T does not publish the file types or how far back the export reaches, and the dates will not match a statement period.

PDF

eStatements in M&T Online Banking

Up to 7 years

One PDF per statement, with the Statement Summary, each account’s Account Summary, Account Activity with its balances, and the Checks Paid Summary.

Where it stops: A PDF only. Getting the rows into Excel or QuickBooks means converting it.

Converting the statement with VouchRow

Any statement you have

The PDF becomes rows in the format your software takes, checked against the Ledger Balance on every row, with each check counted once.

Where it stops: Needs the statement PDF. A month older than the archive has to come from M&T first.

How far back

How far back each M&T option reaches

M&T publishes the depth of its statement archive and its app search, but not of its data export.

Step by step

How to convert an M&T Bank statement

  1. 1Save the eStatements from M&T Online BankingSign in to M&T Online Banking and open your statements (the Statements and Notices service), then save each month you need as a PDF. If you still get paper statements, switch them in Delivery Settings so future months are stored online. Treasury Center users open Online Statements under Reporting.
  2. 2Keep personal and business apartPersonal and business statements use slightly different columns. One statement can also cover several accounts, listed in the Statement Summary on page one. Convert each account into its own account in your software.
  3. 3Upload and convertSign in to VouchRow and add the PDFs. Digital statements convert in batches. A scanned paper statement is read with OCR, one at a time. A password-protected PDF is unlocked in your browser; the password is never sent.
  4. 4Check each row against the Ledger BalanceEvery converted row must reproduce the balance M&T printed, and the month must run from the Beginning Balance to the Ending Balance. If not, VouchRow shows the dollar difference, and clicking any row shows its line on the PDF.
  5. 5ExportExcel or CSV to review, QBO for QuickBooks, QFX or QIF for Quicken, or the Xero CSV preset.

M&T Bank statement to Excel

An .xlsx with one row per deposit, check and debit: posting date, description, check number where there is one, a signed amount, and the balance M&T printed. Deposits & Other Credits come out positive and Checks & Other Debits negative, so the amount column sums to the change from Beginning Balance to Ending Balance.

Because M&T prints a balance on every row, the balance column in the file is the proof: sort by date and it runs from one statement into the next without a gap.

Why it works

Built around how M&T prints a statement

Every row checked

M&T prints a balance on each line of Account Activity. Each converted row is checked against it, so one misread amount shows up at the row where it happened.

Checks counted once

A paid check appears in Account Activity and again in the Checks Paid Summary. It comes out as one row, with the check number kept for matching.

Balance rows left out

The “Beginning Balance” and “Ending Balance:” lines inside the activity table are read as the month’s opening and closing figures, not as transactions.

Two columns, one sign

Deposits & Other Credits (+) become money in and Checks & Other Debits (-) money out, in one signed amount column.

Several accounts per statement

When the Statement Summary lists more than one account, each account’s activity is kept separate so it lands in the right account in your books.

Every row traced to its line

Click a row and the PDF opens at the line it came from, with the Serial Number and balance beside it for a reviewer.

Checked before export

A misread digit is caught on its own row

Every conversion is tested against the statement: the running balance on every row, page subtotals, opening plus movement against closing, the printed credit and debit totals, and the transaction count. When a number does not add up, VouchRow names the row and highlights the line it came from on the PDF.

Arithmetic only: it verifies amounts, balances and totals, not descriptions or dates, and two errors that cancel out would pass. The source-line link covers the rest.

Layout

What an M&T Bank statement looks like

M&T redesigned its eStatement and publishes an annotated example. Page one carries the “Customer Statement for the Period” line at the top right, contact details, and a Statement Summary table listing each account on the statement with its Number, Interest Paid Year-to-Date and Ending Balance, followed by a Total Deposits line. That table is an index of accounts, not activity.

Each account then gets its own block, headed with the account name and number. An Account Summary shows the Beginning Balance, “(+) Deposits & Other Credits” and “(-) Checks & Other Debits” with the number of items in each, “(-) Service Charges”, “(+) Current Interest Paid” and the Ending Balance.

Account Activity follows, with Posting Date, Transaction Description, Serial Number, Deposits & Other Credits (+), Checks & Other Debits (-), Daily Balance and Ledger Balance. M&T describes the Daily Balance as the available balance, including pending items, and the Ledger Balance as the official record of the balance at the end of the previous business day. The Posting Date carries the full year (09/20/2025), so there is no year to guess.

Checks

The Checks Paid Summary and serial numbers

Under Account Activity, a Checks Paid Summary lists Check Number, Date and Amount, three checks to a line, with the Number of Checks Paid and Amount of Checks Paid beneath. A single asterisk marks a gap in the check sequence and a double asterisk a returned check. Every check in it has already appeared in Account Activity as “CHECK NUMBER” with the number in the Serial Number column.

The converted file takes each check once, from Account Activity, and uses the summary as a cross-check: the checks found must add up to the Amount of Checks Paid. The check number goes into the reference or check number field, so QuickBooks or Xero can match it to the bill it paid.

Business

M&T business and commercial statements

M&T’s business banking and commercial statement uses the same Statement Summary and Account Summary, but its Account Activity has five columns: Posting Date, Transaction Description, Deposits & Other Credits (+), Checks & Other Debits (-) and Daily Balance. There is no Serial Number or Ledger Balance column, and the block closes with a NUMBER OF DEPOSITS/CHECKS PAID line. Service charges post as rows in Checks & Other Debits.

Commercial clients who use M&T Treasury Center find statements under Reporting, then Online Statements, with up to seven years of checking, savings and account analysis statements. M&T’s guide says up to 250 statements can be selected and downloaded at once as a zip file of PDFs, which converts in one batch.

QuickBooks and Quicken

M&T with QuickBooks and Quicken

M&T’s own link to Intuit software is M&T Direct Connect: it downloads M&T transaction data into Quicken or QuickBooks with your M&T User ID and password, for $9.95 a month according to M&T’s Direct Connect page and fee schedule. The Digital Services Agreement says the data generally does not include transactions posted since the end of the prior business day.

For months Direct Connect or the export no longer reaches, convert the statements to QBO for QuickBooks or QFX for Quicken and import them into the same account. Each converted row carries a transaction ID, so where a converted month overlaps one already downloaded, the repeats are recognised rather than doubled.

M&T credit card statements are kept in the same seven-year eStatement archive. A card statement is proved against its own summary rather than a running balance; see the credit card statement converter for how that works.

Troubleshooting

Common M&T conversion problems

Most M&T errors come from rows that look like activity but are not.

  • Checks counted twice: the Checks Paid Summary was read as more activity. Each check is already a row in Account Activity.
  • An extra row on the first and last day: the “Beginning Balance” and “Ending Balance:” lines were read as transactions.
  • The running balance is off by pending items: the Daily Balance column was used. Follow the Ledger Balance, the posted record.
  • Accounts mixed together: a statement covering several accounts was read as one. Each account block has its own Account Summary.
  • Rows out of the expected order on one day: M&T posts credits first, then debits, then fees, with checks from lowest to highest amount. The printed order is right; do not re-sort within a day.
  • The export stops short: M&T’s data export covers recent transaction history only. Older months come from the eStatements.

Before you import

After converting an M&T statement, check these

  • The month balancesBeginning Balance plus credits, minus debits and service charges, plus interest equals the Ending Balance. If not, the difference is shown.
  • Each check appears onceThe number of check rows equals the Number of Checks Paid, and their total equals the Amount of Checks Paid.
  • No balance rowsNothing labelled “Beginning Balance” or “Ending Balance:” among the transactions.
  • The Ledger Balance matchesA running total from the Beginning Balance matches the Ledger Balance on every row.
  • One account per fileIf the Statement Summary lists several accounts, each one’s rows went to its own file or account.
  • Same-day order keptCredits, then debits, then fees within a day, as M&T posts them, so the running balance still lines up.

Downloaded activity and statements are not the same thing

Every large US bank offers two different exports, and people reach for the wrong one constantly. Downloadable account activity — CSV, and often QFX or OFX — covers a recent window, typically a few months, and stops. Statements are PDFs, are issued per period, and go back years. If you need last March, the activity export will not have it and the statement will; converting the PDF is how that gap is closed.
Suggested format

QBO for M&T

M&T’s own route into QuickBooks is Direct Connect at $9.95 a month, and it brings in recent activity only. A converted QBO file covers any statement you have and imports into the same QuickBooks bank account as a Web Connect file.

FAQ

M&T statements: questions

How do I export an M&T Bank statement to Excel?

M&T’s data export offers recent transaction history for Quicken or spreadsheet software. For a full statement, or anything older, save the eStatement PDF from M&T Online Banking and convert it here to Excel or CSV. Each row is checked against the balance M&T printed.

How do I get my M&T Bank statement?

Sign in to M&T Online Banking and open your statements (M&T calls the service Statements and Notices). Each statement opens as a PDF you can save or print. If you are not enrolled, enroll in Online Banking first and update Delivery Settings to receive eStatements.

How far back do M&T Bank statements go online?

M&T says eStatements accessed through M&T Online Banking are stored for up to seven years, for checking, savings, CDs, credit cards, loans, lines of credit, mortgages and home equity accounts, as long as you stay enrolled in electronic delivery. Treasury Center also keeps up to seven years.

How do I get my M&T Bank statement on the app?

The M&T Mobile Banking app shows personal and business accounts, but M&T does not publish the menu path for statements in the app. If you cannot find them there, use M&T Online Banking in a browser, where the full seven-year archive is available.

How far back does M&T transaction history go?

In the app, an Account search finds transactions up to 90 days old, and bill payment and transfer searches reach 24 months. The data export covers recent transaction history only. Older activity is in the statements.

Does M&T Bank work with QuickBooks and Quicken?

Yes, through M&T Direct Connect, which M&T lists at $9.95 a month. For months it does not cover, convert the statement PDFs to QBO for QuickBooks or QFX for Quicken and import them into the same account.

What does an M&T Bank statement look like?

Page one has a Statement Summary of accounts. Each account then has an Account Summary (Beginning Balance, Deposits & Other Credits, Checks & Other Debits, Service Charges, Current Interest Paid, Ending Balance), Account Activity with a Daily Balance and Ledger Balance on every row, and a Checks Paid Summary.

Why are my checks doubled after converting?

Because each check appears in Account Activity and again in the Checks Paid Summary. Converted files here take each check once and use the summary to confirm the total.

My M&T statement PDF has a password. Can I still convert it?

Yes. Enter the password when you upload. The PDF is unlocked in your browser and the password is never sent to us.
