The short answer

Can you export a Discover statement to Excel?

You can download recent activity, but the statement itself is a PDF, and where you download it from depends on whether your account has moved to Capital One. Capital One completed its purchase of Discover in May 2025 and started moving Discover card accounts to the Capital One website and app in July 2026, in waves through early 2027. Capital One says it will tell you when your account is ready; until then, you keep using Discover.com and the Discover app.

After the move, Capital One says you will no longer be able to view or manage that account on Discover.com, and that you will be able to view the last 7 years of your credit card statement history on the Capital One website. It also says your Capital One statement will look very similar to your Discover statement. So the PDFs stay available, but the site, the download menus and any app connections change.

Converting the PDF statement gives you Excel, CSV, QBO or QFX for any cycle, Discover-era or Capital One-era. A card statement has no running balance, so each converted cycle is checked against the Account Summary instead: previous balance, minus payments and credits, plus purchases, balance transfers, cash advances, fees and interest, must equal the new balance.

Watch for this

Two boxes say “Previous Balance”, and descriptions run to three lines

A Discover statement has two summaries with a Previous Balance line: the Account Summary (your card balance) and the Cashback Bonus Rewards box (your rewards balance, with amounts earned and redeemed). A converter that grabs the first or last “Previous Balance” it sees can check a cycle against the rewards box, which never balances. In the Transactions section, a purchase often prints on two or three lines: the merchant and city, then the parent company, then a reference code. Read line by line, one purchase becomes three rows, two of them without an amount. The rewards box has to be ignored, the Account Summary used as the proof, and the wrapped lines joined to their purchase.

What you can export from a Discover card

Where you get the files depends on the move. Converting the statement works the same on both sides.

CSV

Not published

Recent card activity for the dates you choose. Quicken users reported in 2022 that the options were PDF, Excel and CSV, with QFX removed.

Where it stops: No statement totals, the range is not published, and the account disappears from Discover.com once it moves.

Capital One shows the last 7 years of statement history and says its statements look very similar to Discover’s.

Where it stops: A PDF only, and paperless has to be set up again within 120 days or statements go back to paper.

Where it stops: Needs the statement PDF. A cycle you never saved has to come from Discover.com or Capital One first.

How far back

How far back each Discover option reaches

The answer depends on whether your account has moved to Capital One yet.

Step by step

How to convert a Discover card statement

  1. 1Save the statements from wherever your account isIf your card has not moved yet, sign in at Discover.com and save the statements you need. If it has moved, sign in at capitalone.com, where Capital One shows the last 7 years of statement history.
  2. 2Save before your move date if you canCapital One says some Discover features are limited for a period before an account moves. Saving the PDFs you need beforehand avoids a gap while you set up Capital One access.
  3. 3Upload and convertSign in to VouchRow and add the PDFs, one card account per batch. Digital statements convert in batches. A scanned paper statement is read with OCR, one at a time. A password-protected PDF is unlocked in your browser; the password is never sent.
  4. 4Check each cycle against the Account SummaryThe rows must add back to the new balance. If they do, the cycle shows as balanced. If not, VouchRow shows the difference in dollars, and clicking any row shows its line on the PDF.
  5. 5ExportExcel or CSV to review, QBO for a QuickBooks credit card account, QFX for Quicken, or the Xero CSV preset.

Why it works

Built around how Discover prints a card statement

The right Previous Balance

The Account Summary is the proof. The Cashback Bonus Rewards box, with its own Previous Balance and earned and redeemed lines, is kept out of both the rows and the check.

Wrapped descriptions joined

Merchant, parent company and reference code print on separate lines. They come out as one description on one row, with one amount.

Merchant Category kept

Discover’s own category for each purchase (Merchandise, Restaurants, Supermarkets and so on) stays with the row, ready to use when you label spending by hand.

Cashback Bonus redemptions labelled

A Cashback Bonus applied as a statement credit is a credit to the card, not a payment from your bank. It keeps its own description so it can be booked as rewards.

Every row traced to its line

Click a row and the PDF opens at the line it came from, useful when the description you see joins three printed lines.

Both sides of the move

Statements saved from Discover.com and statements downloaded from Capital One convert the same way, so a year that spans the move is one continuous set of checked cycles.

Checked before export

A misread digit is caught on its own row

Every conversion is tested against the statement: the running balance on every row, page subtotals, opening plus movement against closing, the printed credit and debit totals, and the transaction count. When a number does not add up, VouchRow names the row and highlights the line it came from on the PDF.

Arithmetic only: it verifies amounts, balances and totals, not descriptions or dates, and two errors that cancel out would pass. The source-line link covers the rest.

Layout

How a Discover card statement is laid out

The Account Summary carries the cycle dates in its heading (for example 09/07/2024 – 10/06/2024) and the lines Previous Balance, Payments and Credits, Purchases, Balance Transfers, Cash Advances, Fees Charged and Interest Charged, each with a plus or minus sign, then New Balance, Credit Line, Credit Line Available and the cash advance lines. Payment information, the minimum payment warning, the Cashback Bonus Rewards box and a FICO score panel sit around it. None of these are transactions.

The Transactions section has two groups. Payments and Credits lists the date (Trans. Date), the description and the Amount, with a minus sign. Purchases adds a Merchant Category column between the description and the Amount. Descriptions often take two or three printed lines for one purchase.

Fees and Interest Charged follows, with “TOTAL FEES FOR THIS PERIOD”, “TOTAL INTEREST FOR THIS PERIOD” and a year-to-date block (total fees and total interest charged in the year). The Interest Charge Calculation table closes the statement. All of these are summaries used as checks, not rows.

Capital One

Discover statements after the move to Capital One

Capital One is moving Discover card accounts in waves, and cardholders with more than one Discover account may see them move on different dates. When yours moves, you sign in at capitalone.com or in the Capital One app; Discover.com and the Discover app stop showing that account. Capital One says you can view the last 7 years of statement history there.

Paperless statements do not carry over on their own: Capital One says you need to set up online access and accept its paperless terms within 120 days, or the account goes back to paper statements. Third-party app connections also have to be re-established after the move, which is why Discover data can stop arriving in a budgeting or bookkeeping app around the move date.

Authorised users and joint account holders get new cards with their own numbers after the move, and Capital One says all of their transactions still appear on the primary cardholder’s statement. Converted statements keep each row as printed, so the card that made a purchase can still be traced from the description and the source line.

Downloads

Downloading Discover activity yourself

Before the move, Discover.com offers an activity download for the card. Discover does not publish the formats or how far back it reaches on a public page, and Quicken users reported in 2022 that the Quicken (QFX) option had gone, leaving PDF, Excel and CSV. After the move, downloads come from Capital One’s site instead, so check what it offers for your card.

Either way, a download covers the dates you pick, not a billing cycle, and has no Account Summary to prove it against. For a tax year, a dispute or a QuickBooks catch-up, the statements are the complete record, and converting them gives the same rows with the cycle checked.

Rewards

Cashback Bonus and Miles on the statement

The Cashback Bonus Rewards box shows Previous Balance, amounts earned this period (by rate, such as 1% and 5%), amounts redeemed and the Cashback Bonus Balance. It is a rewards ledger, not the card balance, and is left out of the rows.

When you redeem rewards as a statement credit, the redemption appears in Payments and Credits, for example “CASHBACK BONUS REDEMPTION PYMT/STMT CRDT”, with a minus sign like a payment. It is kept as its own credit row so a bookkeeper can record it as rewards income or a reduction in expense, not as money paid from a bank account.

Troubleshooting

Common Discover conversion problems

Most Discover errors come from the two summaries, the wrapped lines and the move.

  • The cycle check is off by a small odd amount: it was run against the Cashback Bonus box, which also has a Previous Balance. The Account Summary is the proof.
  • One purchase became three rows: the parent company and reference lines were read as transactions. They belong to the purchase above.
  • A Merchant Category like “Restaurants” ended up in the description or the amount: it is its own column.
  • Cashback redemption booked as a bank payment: it is a statement credit from rewards. Keep its description.
  • Discover.com no longer shows the account: it has moved to Capital One. Sign in at capitalone.com, where the last 7 years of statements are listed.
  • An app stopped importing Discover transactions: connections have to be re-established after the move. Converted statements fill the gap.

Before you import

After converting a Discover statement, check these

  • The cycle balancesPrevious balance plus the rows equals the New Balance on the Account Summary, not the Cashback Bonus balance.
  • One row per purchaseNo rows that are only a parent company name or a reference code with no amount.
  • Payments are creditsYour payment and any Cashback Bonus statement credit are positive in the export, not charges.
  • Rewards credits labelledCashback Bonus redemptions keep their description so they are not booked as payments from a bank account.
  • Dates in the right yearOn a cycle that crosses New Year, December rows are in the old year and January rows in the new one.
  • No gap at the moveThe last Discover.com statement and the first Capital One statement meet: one’s new balance is the next one’s previous balance.

Downloaded activity and statements are not the same thing

Every large US bank offers two different exports, and people reach for the wrong one constantly. Downloadable account activity — CSV, and often QFX or OFX — covers a recent window, typically a few months, and stops. Statements are PDFs, are issued per period, and go back years. If you need last March, the activity export will not have it and the statement will; converting the PDF is how that gap is closed.
Suggested format

QBO for Discover

When a Discover account moves to Capital One, third-party connections have to be set up again, so a QBO converted from the statements is how the cycles before and around the move get into QuickBooks without gaps.

A tax year that spans the move

Months from Discover.com and months from Capital One converted into one consistent set of checked cycles.

02

Bookkeeping after a broken connection

A QuickBooks or budgeting connection that stopped at the move date, with the missing cycles filled from converted statements.

03

Household budgets by category

04

Disputes, divorce and audit files

Older cycles, each row traceable to its line on the statement Discover issued, with rewards credits kept separate from payments.

FAQ

Discover statements: questions

How do I export a Discover statement to Excel?

Download the statement PDF from Discover.com, or from capitalone.com if your account has moved, and convert it here to Excel. The rows are checked against the Account Summary. For recent activity only, the site’s download may be enough.

How do I get my Discover statement now that Discover is part of Capital One?

If your account has not moved yet, use Discover.com or the Discover app. Once it has moved, sign in at capitalone.com or in the Capital One app. Capital One says you can view the last 7 years of your statement history there.

Why is my Discover statement not showing up on Discover.com?

Most likely your account has moved to Capital One. Capital One says that once an account is ready there, you can no longer view or manage it on Discover.com or in the Discover app.

Can I download Discover transactions to Quicken or QuickBooks?

Discover does not publish its download formats, and Quicken users reported in 2022 that the QFX option had been removed. For a dependable file, convert the statement PDFs to QFX for Quicken or QBO for QuickBooks and import them into the card account.

What does a Discover credit card statement look like?

An Account Summary with the cycle dates, a Cashback Bonus Rewards box, then Transactions in two groups (Payments and Credits, and Purchases with a Merchant Category column), then Fees and Interest Charged with period and year-to-date totals, and the Interest Charge Calculation.

How far back can I get old Discover statements?

After your account moves, Capital One shows the last 7 years of statement history. Discover does not publish a figure for Discover.com, so check what your account lists before it moves.

Does a Discover statement have a running balance?

No. Converted rows are checked against the Account Summary instead: previous balance, minus payments and credits, plus purchases, balance transfers, cash advances, fees and interest, must equal the new balance.

My Discover statement PDF has a password. Can I still convert it?

Yes. Enter the password when you upload. The PDF is unlocked in your browser and the password is never sent to us.
